Gynecologic surgery is unique among all surgical subspecialties to the degree in which surgeons have developed and utilized new technology to improve outcomes for patients undergoing life-altering procedures such as a hysterectomy.

The OB/GYN Center has put a great deal of energy into recruiting leading gynecologic surgeons who have specialized training in these groundbreaking new techniques, and have perfected the use of robotics in MIGS procedures. Visit the da Vinci® Surgical System page to learn more about these procedures, like those performed by the da Vinci® Surgical Platform.

Robotic Surgery vs. Traditional Laparoscopy

Robotic surgery through the use of the da Vinci® Surgical Platform allows for even more precision than traditional laparoscopy techniques. The rigid/straight instruments used in a traditional laparoscopy procedure are often limiting. With the da Vinci®, surgeons are able to gain “wristed” movement within the abdomen. The working ends of robotic surgery instruments have every degree of free movement as we do with our own human hands.

With traditional laparoscopy, cameras inside the abdomen only allow surgeons to see a 2-D image on a screen standing near the operating table. With the da Vinci®, specialized 3-D optics allow incredible, high-definition visualization inside the abdomen as well as the crucial addition of depth perception. This increased visibility dramatically increases our ability to perform difficult cases safely.

Everything the da Vinci® Surgical Platform does is under the control of the surgeon, but the robot actually improves upon the movements of a normal human surgeon. These improvements includes:

  • A closeness, clarity and lighting better than standard human vision.
  • The ability to scale down larger, real-time hand movements to a microscopic scale, allowing for incredibly delicate, fine dissection.
  • Elimination of any small tremors or potentially dangerous movements even the most skilled surgeons may have in real life.

(Abdominal) Gynecologic Surgery is split into tradional open surgery and Minially Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS).

Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS) is split into Traditional “Straight Stick” Laparoscopy and DaVinci Robotic Surgery.

DaVinci Robotic Surgery can be Multi-Port Robotic Surgery or “Single-Site” single-incision Robotic Surgery.
